In another interview with CNBC-TV18 in May 2010, Shiv Nadar talked about foreign partners for the Shiv Nadar University.
Q: Tell us more about the university in Uttar Pradesh?
A: A year and a half ago, the land was given to us. We bought it, everything what we do we make sure that the financial commitments are all ours. We bought the land, the construction is on way, it would be done by this fall and our objective is to start the courses next fall. So the university will have initially five schools which is engineering, business, communication, teaching and liberal arts.
Q: Can you share with us some of the investment details?
A: This is a very heavy big ticket school. The initial budget that we have allocated is USD 600 million. So far something close to USD 100 million has already been spent. Buying the land, developing the land and the school of engineering is nearing completion.
Among other things, in this interview, Shiv Nadar also expands on other activities of the Shiv Nadar Foundation in the education space including
Q: Let me talk to you about your next venture and that is the Shiv Nadar University. I believe that you are talking to foreign partners for the Shiv Nadar University as well. Where do you think you stand with that plan?
A: The response that we have received from the best schools in the world is extremely encouraging. What do we start with? The response is never, will we or will we not. Some of the things which we also need clearance that we do not want to tie up with a single institution. We want to have multiple institutions because people are good in multiple areas. We have not completed meeting everybody. We would do that by July.
- the spark for picking education as the area for his philanthropy
- the VidyaGyan project and their work on primary education in rural Uttar Pradesh.
- the SSN Group of Institutions in Chennai, how they set it up, the association with Carnegie Mellon University, and the business model for funding it over time
And as for the Shiv Nadar University all the plans are in place. Architectural plans are in place. The land is acquired by us. Preliminary construction has already started. So I am hoping by next summer we can at least start the school of technology. But in my mind how we have to conceptualize Shiv Nadar University is to be a lot more like an American University, to have a --school of technology, have a school of communication absolutely have a school of management, have a school of arts and sciences and have a school of education. So I am hoping that every year we are going to be able to open one school. You know universities takes time to come up in terms of infrastructure, but in terms of what you can offer and your offerings and getting your faculty in place
